Larkspur Fire to Provide Mitigation/Wildfire Hand Crew
The Perry Park Metropolitan District (PPMD) was awarded a $700,000 grant for Community Wildfire Mitigation Plan (CWPP) project implementation from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) program.  This highly competative grant was awarded by and will administered through the Colorado State Forest Service who received funds from the ARRA for top priority mitigation projects as identified within existing CWPPs in Colorado.  These monies will enable a partnership between the PPMD and the Larkspur Fire Protection District (LFPD) to mitigate non-federal lands adjacent to and within the PPMD.  The PPMD will contract with the LFPD to provide a ten person hand crew that will mitigate areas of the PPMD and adjoining non-federal lands located in terrain that can not be reached with machinery.  This ten person hancrew will also be trained and available to fight wildland fires within the LFPD and Douglas County during the two year time frame of the grant.  This will benefit all residents of the LFPD and Douglas County with the addition of a fire fighting resource that currently does not exist.

USFS Wildfire Mitigation Project in Perry Park
USFS Mitigation Project in Perry Park begins!
USFS Mitigation Project in Perry Park begins!

The USFS has started a long awaited wildfire mitigation project adjacent to the Perry Park subdivision.  After 8 years and many hurdles, the USFS is finally implementing a mitigation project that is critical to the wildland fire safety of Perry Park residents.  The project will treat about 80 acres of Pike National Forest land adjacent to Perry Park.  This project will enhance the overall forest health of the treated area by the thinning and removal of damaged and overcrowded vegetation.  This project will also enhance the habitat for numerous wildlife species and restore the land to more closely resemble historical conditions that existed prior to the suppression of wildland fire from the environment.  Many thanks to the USFS for their tenacity in bringing this project to a much welcomed reality!!
